Planning a Sydney coastal swim this weekend? Randwick City Council’s October 23 update reports that Coogee and Maroubra beaches have reopened for swimming, while the immediate Lurline Bay area remains closed. This is a local access update checked on October 23, 2026, rather than a forecast for the whole weekend.

Three places, different instructions

The council says a juvenile whale carcass remains among rocks at Lurline Bay. Coogee has reopened, with swimmers directed to the flagged area. At Maroubra, the notice describes a small flagged swimming area in front of the lifeguard office. People are asked to avoid Lurline Bay and stay out of the water immediately around it; barricades remain in place. Those distinctions matter more than a general headline saying that the beaches are open.

The notice is specific to these locations in Randwick, New South Wales. It does not announce a nationwide rule change, establish permanent access, or guarantee conditions at another beach. We are reporting the council’s dated operational advice, not independently assessing the site.

Why an older closure may still appear

During our check, the NSW Government’s Beachwatch page still displayed an earlier closure notice with an October 22 update timestamp. The newer council notice is dated October 23. Water-quality forecasts, sampling dates and access notices are different information fields; a water-quality indicator should never be treated as permission to pass a physical closure.

For a traveler, this is a useful reason to record both the place and the time when saving an advisory. A screenshot without its timestamp can remain in a group chat after the underlying situation changes. Share the live official link alongside any saved message, and check the current local instructions again before setting out.

Keep the day’s plan flexible

A practical trip note can have separate lines for the planned beach, current access notice, meeting point and an alternative activity. This avoids turning a change at one bay into a confusing update for everyone meeting elsewhere. The decision about entering the water belongs with current conditions and the responsible local authorities, rather than an equipment checklist or an older travel article.

If your wider trip also includes snorkeling, our mask-fit buying checklist can help with a separate equipment decision. Owning suitable gear does not override a closure or replace on-site lifeguard instructions. The cover photograph is an archive view of Coogee, not a record of today’s reopening or a live view of the swimming area.
