A camera can advertise RAW photographs while restricting the combinations in which it saves them. Before buying an action camera for snorkeling, write down the still-photo mode and view you actually want. A generic RAW tick in a comparison table does not establish that those settings can be used together.
Read the exceptions beside the feature
The HERO8 Black REVC manual, page 124, provides a concrete older-model example. Its RAW setting saves both a JPEG and a GPR file. It lists supported photo modes but also requires SuperPhoto to be off, the digital lens to be Wide and zoom to be off. It excludes continuous photos and gives further timing conditions for time-lapse and night-lapse photographs.
Those conditions belong to that model and manual revision. They do not establish the same setting combinations on another GoPro or another maker’s camera. The purchase question is therefore which complete mode-and-output combination your candidate documents, rather than whether the word RAW appears somewhere in its specification.
Compare a shooting combination, not an isolated checkbox
Make one row for each task you plan to use: a single photograph, a burst, or an interval series. Add columns for the selected digital lens, any zoom, processing option and saved file types. Look for an explicit supported combination in the current manual. If one field is unclear, ask the manufacturer before assuming a favourite processing mode and RAW can operate together.
Separate a still photograph from a frame taken out of a video. Ask which files the camera produces in each workflow. This avoids paying for a feature whose documented capture method differs from the one you intended to use on the trip.
Include the files after the session
Ask to see a sample file from the intended mode and confirm that your existing editing software supports that actual format. Keep the original files and a separate edited version according to your own storage plan. An attractive camera preview is not proof that a particular RAW file was saved, transferred or opened successfully.
GoPro’s GPR format introduction describes its DNG basis; that is not a promise that every application supports every camera revision. RAW support also does not guarantee better results for every scene. TRIMIX has not compared underwater image quality, edited sample files or tested the example camera’s settings.
Ask for a precise capture function
Ask TRIMIX about actual camera availability and the documented photo-output combination. Include the model, intended mode and file type you need. A camera or housing’s water-use limits remain separate manufacturer requirements; this guide grants no underwater use permission. An inquiry creates no order or automatic email.
Evergreen equipment guide checked November 5, 2026. The older HERO8 Black REVC manual carries a 2021 copyright notice but no publication date; it is used as a current-accessible model-specific evergreen reference. GoPro’s GPR introduction has no displayed publication date. Product descriptions are manufacturer documentation, not TRIMIX hands-on tests, stock confirmations or guarantees of personal suitability.
