Buying a Dive Compass: Keep the Mount and Hemisphere Version Together

A dive compass name can describe several different offers: a wrist-mounted instrument, a console-specific version or a model on a retractor. The hemisphere designation can be another separate choice. Preserve the complete variant name when comparing offers; the headline model alone may leave out the detail that matters.

A console name can include a mounting position

The Suunto Combos and Mechanical Instruments instructions, carrying revisions through August 2021, identify front and back SK-8 console-mount models and northern/southern balancing options. They describe different attachment positions in the specified console system. That documentation is a model-specific compatibility reference, not evidence that any round compass capsule fits any console boot.

Before ordering, record your existing console or intended wrist system, its model identifier and the exact offered compass variant. Ask whether the offer is a complete mounted instrument or only a component. A photograph of a round dial cannot establish the underside, attachment position or included carrier.

Read hemisphere guidance for the particular model

SCUBAPRO’s FS-2 page describes use in both northern and southern hemispheres and offers wrist-mount or retractor versions. This is the manufacturer’s statement for that design. It should not be transferred to an SK-8 option, a different SCUBAPRO compass or an unidentified second-hand instrument.

The useful question is therefore more precise than asking whether a brand works worldwide: which exact instrument, balancing designation and mounting package is being offered, and what does its manufacturer say about the regions where you intend to use it? Get an uncertain designation resolved before relying on the instrument.

Build one complete comparison row

For each candidate, keep the model, hemisphere specification, mounting package, included accessories and applicable instructions in one row. Add the seller’s exact item identifier. If considering a component for an existing system, request the manufacturer’s documented matching part rather than relying on apparent diameter or a casual description such as universal.

When comparing readability, distinguish the maker’s listed features from your own assessment during a supervised equipment familiarisation. This guide does not teach bearings, underwater navigation or instrument installation, and it does not rank these models from a TRIMIX test.

Ask for documentation before assuming supply

Ask TRIMIX about actual compass availability and exact-model information with the requested instrument, mounting system and travel region. No TRIMIX listing or stock for the discussed compasses has been established. The photograph is an archival comparison of wrist and console mounts; it does not identify either pictured instrument as a current FS-2 or SK-8 variant.
