BSAC has released its annual findings for incidents reported during 2025. Its November 2, 2026 announcement contains two totals with different geographical coverage. Keeping those scopes attached to the numbers is essential before discussing what the report means for divers, clubs or equipment decisions.
The two counts do not describe the same population
The release announcement reports 220 UK incidents and nine fatalities, while its broader UK-and-overseas total is 305 incidents. These are reported incidents during a defined calendar year, not counts of every dive or a universal measure of diving risk.
The separate annual report resource explains the collection scope: UK diving incidents across agencies and backgrounds, plus incidents worldwide involving BSAC members. It identifies the current reporting period as January 1–December 31, 2025. The year of the incidents and the November 2026 release date must remain distinct.
What is newly available
The release highlights additional analysis of drysuit inversion incidents and continuing examination of immersion pulmonary oedema reports. Those are themes named by BSAC; this article does not diagnose a condition, supply an avoidance technique or reproduce the full report. The new development is the released findings, beyond the earlier invitation to the November 2 webinar.
A useful reading note has four fields: the exact finding, the population it covers, the reporting period, and the method or qualification beside it. This makes it harder for a UK subtotal to become an asserted worldwide count when a chart or sentence is shared without context.
Use the evidence without turning it into a product ranking
For a club discussion, first ask what information a reported count would need before becoming a rate. The number of dives, participants, reporting practices and comparison population all matter to that different question. An incident total alone does not establish that a particular cylinder size, manufacturer or equipment category caused an outcome or provides protection from it.
Next, connect a relevant report theme to a question for the club’s qualified instructors and the actual equipment documentation. Keep that question separate from a change already adopted in training or procedures. Reading an annual report does not replace instruction or authorize a new use for unfamiliar equipment.
The official report resource now states that Jim Watson presented the findings on November 2 and provides a YouTube player below that statement. Use that resource for the report and presentation. We have verified the page and player link, but have not played or watched the session, so we do not report its full contents or guarantee playback. No personal incident details, medical advice or equipment endorsement are inferred here.
Evidence and date notes
Dated development checked November 4, 2026. BSAC Incident Report released for 2025: 2026-11-02 | BSAC Annual Diving Incident Report current resource: undated; exact publication day not shown. Incident reporting period and report release are distinct. Reported counts are not individual risk estimates or equipment-causation findings.
