GoPro’s October MISSION 1 Update: Faster Photos, Different Water Limits

For a water-sports trip, an action camera may spend one moment recording video and the next trying to catch a still photograph. GoPro’s October 13, 2026 MISSION 1 software announcement addresses that second task, with changes to shutter response and continuous capture.

What changed in the photography controls

GoPro says the free update brings faster shutter response, press-and-hold continuous photos and a visible buffer indicator to MISSION 1 Series cameras. It calls the response “zero-lag,” with a footnote tying the claim to 12MP Standard and 50MP RAW settings. It says results vary with lighting, motion, settings and card performance; the new functions are not supported in SuperPhoto, Interval Photo or Burst Photo. Read the dated official announcement.

The MISSION 1 update page identifies version 4.01 with the same October 13 date. Check the page for your exact model before updating. A family-wide announcement does not remove the need to match a download to the camera in your hand.

Choose a capture task before choosing a mode

Our practical suggestion is to make a short topside test sequence before packing: a single photo, a held-button sequence and a normal video clip. Review the files on the device you will use during the trip. This confirms that you recognize the controls and can find the result; it is not a laboratory test of the advertised response time.

Also decide which results you want to keep. A long sequence creates a selection task afterwards. For a travel story, a clear photograph of one moment may be more useful than dozens of nearly identical frames that never get reviewed.

The model name changes the underwater question

GoPro’s current product FAQ distinguishes MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO from MISSION 1 PRO ILS. It rates the first two as waterproof to 20 metres without a housing. ILS, with interchangeable lenses, is described as weatherproof rather than waterproof and requires a housing for underwater use. That distinction deserves attention before any discussion of firmware features.

A software update is not evidence that a camera, lens, microphone or other accessory has gained water protection. Check the complete setup rather than extending a camera-body statement to every connected item. An underwater housing also has its own compatibility and operating instructions.

Keep three kinds of change separate

The announcement also covers the MISSION Monitor app and a GoPro Labs beta for ILS lens support. Those are separate software paths with separate purposes. A user interested in the new still-photo controls should not assume that an experimental firmware installation is required.

Record the camera model and software version when comparing a demonstration with your own setup. This makes it easier to distinguish an unavailable feature from a setting you have not selected, and it gives support something concrete to investigate.

Contact TRIMIX about documented camera-mount compatibility on a listed water-sports product; include the camera and any housing you intend to use.
