Before adding a motor to a paddleboard, ask the insurer to assess the actual powered configuration. A policy described simply as paddleboard insurance is not enough information to establish cover for a board, propulsion pack and intended activity. Keep the insured equipment, permitted use and waterway requirements in separate parts of the record.

Identify which loss the cover addresses

The UK government’s boat-insurance guidance says requirements depend on how and where a boat is used, and directs owners to the relevant navigation authority. That geographical scope matters: a requirement for one inland navigation should not become a claim about every UK beach or overseas waterway.

The Canal and River Trust’s insurance page, edited August 25, 2026, specifies at least £2 million in third-party cover before buying a boat licence and distinguishes this from optional comprehensive protection for the boat, contents and crew. The Trust’s applicable craft category and licence terms still need checking for an individual motor-added SUP; do not infer a universal powered-SUP approval from this general page.

Give the insurer a configuration description

Send the complete board, motor, battery and adapter identities with the proposed use and locations. Describe the addition explicitly instead of asking about an unidentified ordinary paddleboard. If a policy is held already, ask what disclosure or amendment is required before relying on it for the changed equipment.

  • Does the insurer accept this identified motor-assisted SUP activity and installation?
  • Who may operate it, and does the proposed personal, shared, rental or business use fall within cover?
  • Which territories and waterway types are included or excluded?
  • Does third-party liability cover the proposed powered use, and what limit applies?
  • Are the motor, separate battery and accessories covered for the losses the owner wants insured?

Ask for the policy wording or written confirmation supporting the answer. A club membership card, equipment receipt or warranty statement answers a different question and should not be treated as an insurer’s acceptance. Also check any relevant requirements with the actual navigation authority rather than selecting the lower figure from a general summary.

Keep purchase evidence useful

Retain the declared configuration, policy schedule, applicable wording, cover dates and unresolved conditions together. Record the insured value and ownership evidence only from actual documents. Do not assume that a policy paying for a stolen board must also cover liability arising from powered use, or that liability cover pays for the owner’s damaged motor.

This checklist does not interpret an individual’s policy, recommend an insurance provider or assert that a particular claim will be paid. It helps obtain the answer before buying or using a propulsion system. TRIMIX has not arranged cover or confirmed an insurable installation for these examples.

The TRIMIX SUP compatibility checklist covers the wider equipment record. To ask about actual SUP thruster availability and compatibility, include the board, fin-box, motor and adapter models, your country and the specific question above. There is no current public TRIMIX SUP-motor listing. An inquiry prepares a request; it does not confirm supply, compatibility, permission to use a waterway or an order.
