A swim metronome can display a small number for seconds between beeps or a larger number for beeps per minute. Those values describe different units. When comparing devices, first establish what you want the cue to represent; the number on a product image does not reveal the training task.
Read the mode before the number
The official FINIS Tempo Trainer Pro manual separates three modes. Its first mode uses a time interval with fine adjustments, its second uses longer pacing intervals in minutes and seconds, and its third expresses a rate in strokes or cycles per minute. These are documented functions of that model, not an assessment that one setting is right for every swimmer.
For buying purposes, retain the mode name, displayed unit, available adjustment and intended cue in one row. Ask your coach whether the requested cue concerns individual strokes, complete cycles, a pool length or another interval. Resolve the counting convention before treating two devices’ numbers as equivalent.
Make a unit check without prescribing a pace
A purely mathematical example shows the issue: 75 evenly spaced cues per minute correspond to 60 divided by 75, or 0.8 seconds between cues. The number 75 is not a suggested stroke rate. The calculation only checks a unit conversion; it cannot determine technique, effort or an appropriate training plan.
A longer cue intended to coincide with a length is another task. Its meaning depends on the agreed distance and counting method. Do not assume a device detects a wall, measures speed or verifies that you reached the target merely because it produces an audible cue.
Compare the physical package too
FINIS’s current product record describes a small waterproof device worn beneath a cap and identifies an included clip for dryland exercise. Check the current manual for the actual wearing arrangement; an accessory’s presence in the box should not be turned into an unsupported underwater mounting instruction.
Before purchasing, ask about the supplied accessories, exact model, current instructions and ownership support. Check whether the coach or pool permits the intended use during the session. Keep the session plan with the person supervising training rather than copying a manufacturer’s illustrative workout as a personal prescription.
Make the inquiry about the required function
Ask TRIMIX about actual timing-accessory availability with the required mode, unit and model documentation. Supply of the FINIS unit has not been established. The archived AIS pool photograph provides lane-training context; it does not show this device, a measured pace or a TRIMIX training trial.
