Marker-buoy listings can use the terms SMB, DSMB and safety sausage loosely. Before comparing size or price, identify the intended function and the exact design. Equipment selected for one kind of marking should not quietly become equipment for another because its colour looks similar.
Resolve the type with your instructor or operator
In its August 2022 explanation, Divers Alert Network distinguishes a delayed surface marker buoy from the broader SMB category. It explains the relevance of an over-pressure valve to a DSMB design. Use that terminology to ask a more precise buying question, rather than interpret every inflatable orange tube as suitable for the same use.
Start with the training and operating context you have agreed with your qualified instructor or dive operator. Ask which type and features are required. This guide does not teach inflation, line handling, underwater deployment, emergency signaling or use as an ascent reference.
Compare the exact valve configuration
DiveAlert’s model comparison identifies closed and semi-closed designs, different dimensions and different listed inflation arrangements. For example, its DMB1 and DMB4 options do not share the same specified construction or inflator arrangement. This is a reason to retain the full model suffix, not a reason to improvise an inflation method.
Keep the manufacturer’s intended method, valve description and applicable instructions together. If a seller substitutes a model, ask whether the documented arrangement has changed. A photograph of the outside cannot resolve an omitted valve specification or a missing instruction sheet.
Keep size and supplied components separate
Record the stated dimensions, colour, reflective details, attachment points and any supplied pouch or line-management equipment in separate fields. Do not turn a buoy’s listed lift value into approval to use it as a lifting bag. Likewise, an attachment ring does not establish compatibility with any spool, reel or carrying arrangement.
Ask the operator about its local signaling conventions and required equipment. A colour convention described for one team or region is not a universal instruction. Visibility also depends on the actual conditions and support arrangements; this article makes no claimed detection distance or rescue guarantee.
Buy against a documented requirement
Ask TRIMIX about actual marker-buoy availability with the required type, complete model and supplier documentation request. No stock or compatibility for the examples has been established. The archived photograph shows an unfurled buoy from a 2004 upload; its precise model and capture date are not established. It does not demonstrate deployment, current condition or any specification discussed above.
