Swimming Watches: Pool Length and Open-Water Tracking Need Separate Checks

A watch described as suitable for swimming may offer several activity profiles with different inputs and outputs. Before buying one for both a pool and open water, check the exact model’s documentation for each setting. The word swimming on a feature list does not describe how every session will be recorded.

Start with the pool’s length and units

Apple’s Apple Watch swimming guide for watchOS 27 presents Pool Swim and Open Water Swim as separate workout choices. It asks the user to set the pool length for a Pool Swim workout, and describes automatic recording of sets and rests, with stroke types and total distance in the summary.

When comparing equipment, ask whether the watch accepts your venue’s pool length and units, including any custom-length setting you need. A 25-yard pool and a 25-metre pool require different information. Confirm the venue’s actual length rather than estimating it from a photograph.

Check how the exact model treats each environment

The Garmin Forerunner 965 owner’s manual, April 2026 edition v11, describes pool distance as based on completed lengths and the selected pool size. Its open-water activity instead includes satellite acquisition before recording. These are documented differences within one named watch’s activity profiles.

The manual also identifies functions that belong specifically to pool swimming, including stroke-type identification and drill logging. Do not assume that a metric appearing in the pool section also appears in the open-water summary. Nor does the presence of satellite tracking establish a measured accuracy level or a navigation guarantee.

Write the output you actually want

Make separate rows for pool-length counting, pool rest intervals, any supported way of recording drills, and open-water distance recording. Beside each row, put the exact watch model, software documentation and the display or summary you expect to review. Ask to see the relevant manual section before treating a broad feature claim as confirmation.

If you already own a watch, this record can help distinguish a missing capability from a setting question. Keep any uncertain behavior unresolved until model-specific support confirms it. This article does not prescribe swimming technique, provide a setup sequence, or recommend using recorded distance to plan an open-water route.

Keep the inquiry specific

Read the TRIMIX buying guide and ask about actual equipment availability and exact-model documentation when relevant. These Apple and Garmin references do not establish that TRIMIX supplies either product. TRIMIX has not performed tracking-accuracy tests.

Evidence and dates: Evergreen documentation comparison checked November 6, 2026. The Apple guide states no publication day; watchOS 27 identifies its guide version. Garmin identifies April 2026 and v11, without an exact publication day. By TRIMIX Sports.
