Underwater Strobe or Video Light? Start With the Image Task and Trigger Path

Before buying underwater lighting, decide whether the equipment must illuminate a still photograph, a video sequence, or both. A strobe specification and a continuous video-light specification describe different functions. The next question is how the actual camera system will control the light, not simply which product has the largest number.

Separate flash output from continuous illumination

SeaLife’s flash/strobe explanation identifies external flashes as tools for underwater still images and describes adjustable output and positioning. A flash used for one exposure is different from the continuous illumination needed throughout a video recording. This is a function distinction, not a claim that every still photographer needs the same light.

A combined product can offer both roles. Ikelite’s RC232 fiber-optic model lists a strobe function, a separate 2500-lumen video light and a fiber-optic trigger connection. Its comparison table records strobe power in watt-seconds while recording the LED light in lumens. Keep those figures in separate fields rather than treating them as a single interchangeable brightness score.

Build the purchase around a task list

  • Still photograph: ask which supported camera or housing signal triggers the strobe and which exposure-control functions are documented.
  • Video: ask which continuous-light function operates during recording and which settings its specification describes.
  • Combined shooting: ask how the exact unit changes between functions and which functions operate together.
  • Physical setup: identify the documented mount, arm and any required cable without assuming that a fitting alone establishes electronic compatibility.
  • Ownership: record the specified battery, charger or battery-pack version and the relevant care instructions.

Send the camera, housing and light model codes together. A cable being called fiber optic is not enough to establish its connectors, trigger compatibility or supported automatic control for every camera. Ask for the manufacturer’s actual compatibility documentation and the complete accessories list.

Avoid comparing an incomplete system

If one offer is a light head and another is a package, list the included power source, connection and mounting hardware before comparing the purchase. For a hybrid product, record strobe and video specifications separately so the added continuous-light function is neither overlooked nor mistaken for the flash output.

Conditions and settings attached to a runtime or output statement should stay with that statement. TRIMIX has not measured the example light’s output, colour performance or endurance. Ask your activity provider about camera and lighting rules; equipment selection does not justify disturbing animals or adding an unsupported load to your own setup.

Ask for the missing function

Ask TRIMIX about actual lighting availability and the complete camera connection. Include whether you intend stills, video or both. No current TRIMIX lighting listing or cross-brand compatibility is implied, and preparing an inquiry does not send an email or order equipment.

Evergreen buyer guide checked November 4, 2026. SeaLife’s Flash/Strobe page metadata records publication February 12, 2018 and modification January 4, 2024; these are webpage dates, not product-launch dates. Ikelite’s product page is undated. Specifications are attributed examples, not a TRIMIX performance test.
